TESOL Certification

A TESOL certification is a qualification allows graduates to Teach English to Students of Other Languages. In that way, it is a synonym for TEFL, and an umbrella term under which CELTA certificate courses and other ESL teacher training courses can be found. Over time, the number of different acronyms used in the profession has grown. They may seem a little daunting at first, and many can appear to be redundant because they are interchangeable with another, but on the whole they are quite useful.

For instance, general TESOL certification does not indicate any specialty, but rather just a general qualification to teach English, whereas CELTA indicates to employers that you have received a University of Cambridge-regulated certificate to teach English to adults. But it also speaks to the workshops in teaching English to children and business English that are part of the CELTA curriculum and part of your CELTA training.

With TESOL certification, graduates are qualifies to teach English abroad; that is, qualified to teach English in Japan, teach English in Boston, or teach English anywhere between those places. But the better your TESOL certification, the better your chances of finding a job where you want to work (and finding a well-paying and reliable job). Of course, we at Teaching House believe (and we’re sure language centers all around agree) that CELTA certification is the best type of TESOL certification available.
