COURSE CONTENT

Overview of main course content

There are five ‘units’ of learning in Teaching House CELTA training courses.

  • Individuals in the teaching and learning context: educational backgrounds and traditions of learners, motivation, differing learning styles, etc.

  • Language analysis and awareness: how English works, basic concepts and terms used to describe form and meaning of grammar, vocabulary and phonology; how to plan and teach grammar, vocabulary and functions lessons

  • Language skills: how to teach reading, writing, listening & speaking
  • Planning and resources for different teaching contexts: selecting and adapting materials for learning activities and tasks; working with textbooks and supplementary materials; creating and designing materials and activities
  • Developing teaching skills and professionalism: classroom management, presence and control, monitoring and correction of learners; self assessment of strengths and weaknesses, working as teacher, colleague, employer

While this covers the content of CELTA courses, the workload includes the following: 4 written assignments, each of approximately 1000 words, 6 hours of classroom teaching practice, many hours of classroom observation and feeback, as well as participation during input sessions.

Schedule

For the full-time course, times are 9:00 am – 5:30pm, Monday – Friday. The course lasts four weeks.

For the part-time course, times are 6 – 9:30 pm each Monday and Wednesday. The group also meets on two Saturdays during the course.

Both the full-time and part-time courses are the same length: 130 total contact hours. You can check the CELTA course dates page for a more detailed schedule.

The 4-week course is very intensive and requires a full-time commitment. In addition to class time, you can expect to spend a part of most evenings and at least one day over the weekend working independently on lesson planning and course assignments. Cambridge ESOL recommends dedicating a minimum of 80 hours to this work.

100% attendance is required. Employment during the course and very long commutes are strongly discouraged. A clear schedule for four weeks is the best approach to take.

The part-time course is equal in nature to the full-time course but is spread out over a longer period of time. It is designed for people who have other commitments (work, study, etc.) but candidates need to commit to attending the course for the complete 15/16 week period and doing course work at weekends and/or on alternative days of the week when they are not studying on the course.

You should also have good physical, mental and emotional health in order to be able to cope with the rigorous demands of CELTA certification and the workload placed on you.
