Delta Module Two

Developing Professional Practice

The Teaching House Module Two is a practical course which includes developmental assessment of your teaching. The module is a blended program of distance learning through the Pre-Course Program and a 5-week intensive face-to-face course at Teaching House New York.

The module includes:

  • Planning, delivery, reflection on and evaluation of 5 observed lessons (each 45-60 minutes long)
  • 10 hours of observation, reflection and evaluation of professional teaching
  • Total of about 200 ‘learning hours’ which is divided between selfstudy hours (lesson preparation, assignment research and writing, background reading) and contact hours (guided lesson preparation with your tutor, attending seminars, teaching and observing lessons)

The four-week Pre-Course Program consists of research, material evaluation and preparation. During the face-to-face component trainees attend seminars on teaching-related topics, guided lesson planning and observed teaching practice. The teaching practice classes are all at Teaching House and observed by our experienced tutors who will give detailed feedback and support. Candidates don’t need to be in New York for the Pre-Course Program, but should arrive a day or two before the Content Component to settle in before the program starts.

Module Two focuses on developing professional practice by reviewing the theory and practice of teaching and a range of factors that affect teaching and learning.

The aims of Module Two are to:

  1. Develop candidates’ awareness of the ways that different circumstances affect the learning and teaching of English, and factors affecting the individual’s ability to learn
  2. Develop understanding of the different roles of teachers and the principles underpinning them in the context of English language Teaching House Develop the skills to plan lessons for different learning abilities
  3. Develop the skills to plan lessons for different learning abilities
  4. Develop the knowledge and skills to support learners in a range of contexts
  5. Develop candidates’ understanding of teaching
  6. Develop candidates’ beliefs about teaching and help them to evaluate their own performance and to improve as a teacher
  7. Broaden candidates’ understanding of teaching as a professional practice
  8. Develop expertise in spoken and written communication within their professional roles.

To achieve this, the course is divided into three sections:

  1. Teaching Practice – candidates prepare for and teach a number of tutor-observed lessons to a range of different levels of language learners. In addition, a senior Cambridge Delta tutor externally assesses one lesson of each candidate.
  2. Seminars – during the course, candidates attend in a series of seminars, which cover the core topics of the program and support Teaching Practice.
  3. Background reading/lesson preparation – candidates work to complete background assignments to support their lessons and increase their understanding of underlining issues to do with second language acquisition, methodology and learner motivation.

The assessment for the Delta Module Two is through a portfolio of work, which includes assessed teaching practice, written lesson plans and background assignments. For more information about the Delta Module Two assessment.
