Overview of the Cambridge Delta
For teachers who have obtained their CELTA qualification and have teaching experience, Teaching House in conjunction with the University of Cambridge offer the Delta Diploma. The Delta qualification was previously known as the DELTA, or the Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults.
The Delta is a higher qualification that advances teachers’ careers by expanding their understanding of the principles and practices of ESL methodology while applying them to their own professional experiences.
The Delta provides a broad theoretical foundation of effective methods to teach language skills, grammar and vocabulary, as well as innovative methods for adapting course book materials and using authentic materials in the classroom. There are also in-depth sessions on discourse analysis, student motivation, a wide variety of methodologies and a large component of observed teaching practice.
With a Delta, teachers are able to pursue better jobs with higher salaries and benefits, and have the option of advancing to educational management. A teacher with this qualification will often go on to obtain positions such as Senior Teacher or Director of Studies, or they can become a teacher trainer on courses such as the Cambridge CELTA or Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT).
The University of Cambridge accredits and issues certification for all Delta courses. Certification requires completion of three modules:
- Module One: Theoretical course leading up to the Delta Module One Exam
- Module Two: Combination of theory and practice which includes observed teaching practice
- Module Three: Project-based component allowing candidate to specialize in an area of their choice and professional interest
The Delta qualification is offered at various centers around the world, but only Teaching House provides the Blended Delta – a unique blend of face-to-face and distance learning, combining the best of both modes of education while reducing the overall course expense. Teaching House is the only University of Cambridge Delta provider in the United States.
To apply for the Delta, you must have:
- a University of Cambridge CELTA certificate
- at least 1 year of full-time post-CELTA experience teaching English to adults
- if you are a non-native speaker of English, you must have a level of English equivalent to C1. This is equal to CAE or comparable score on IELTS or TOEFL.
